SYNOPSIS

1975: Ten year-old Hà enjoys the thrill of the market, playing with her mischievous friends, and taking care of her very own papaya tree. When the Vietnam War reaches Saigon, Hà and her family are forced to flee. INSIDE OUT AND BACK AGAIN, a play for young audiences and their grown-ups, is the imaginative, emotional story of a Vietnamese family’s journey into the American unknown, and the heartbreak and surprises they encounter along the way.

SEEKING

Both Equity (AEA) or non-Equity for a cast of 5 adult actors (age 18+) for Spring 2020 and beyond as a part of Theater Mu’s revamped Education and Outreach program. The play will travel to schools, community centers, and Mu family events going forward. Actors will be paid a stipend for the rehearsal/development period and on a per-performance basis.

CHARACTER TRACKS

HÀ: Vietnamese. (18+ actor to play a 10 yr-old). Lead role. Loves food. The play is told from her POV and through her vivid imagination.

BROTHER: Vietnamese. He plays 3 distinct roles: QUANG (21) The eldest, most serious, VŪ (18) The coolest. Obsessed with Bruce Lee , and KHÔI (14) Quiet, sensitive, loves animals.

MOTHER: Vietnamese. (30s-40s) She is filled with determination and grit.

ENSEMBLE ONE: African American. (30s–40s) She plays MRS. WASHINGTON, a family friend in Alabama, MISS SCOTT, a school teacher, and others.

ENSEMBLE TWO: Caucasian. (20s-40s) He plays COWBOY, PINK BOY, and others.

NOTE

Vietnamese American/Southeast Asian American actors are particularly encouraged to audition for Hà, Brother, and Mother tracks.

REHEARSALS

Theater Mu Studio (755 Prior Ave. N #107, Saint Paul, MN 55104)

February 25 – March 13, 2020.
Combination of weekdays, nights, and weekends pending cast availability.

PERFORMANCES

Booking now. Shows will be booked mostly for weekday times (pending school schedules) as early as March 14, 2020 and continue through May 2020 and beyond. This is not an on-call contract. Performances will be scheduled based on venue interest/actor availability. The initial performer contract will cover the rehearsal period and two guaranteed performances. All performances thereafter will be paid on a per-show basis as Mu’s Education & Outreach program expands throughout the Twin Cities metro and beyond. Actor availability will be assessed and taken into consideration when booking performances.
