Theater Mu holds periodic playwright cohorts for local, national, and international playwrights at all stages of their careers. Our cohorts always offer a stipend to our participants, and we center many of the intentions of our first playwright cohort, the Mu Tang Clan (2020/21), which is to create a safe space for Asian American playwrights to be bold, vulnerable, and supported.
According to the Visibility Report from the Asian American Performers Action Coalition, “Asian American playwrights, composers, librettists, and lyricists made up just 4.4% of all writers produced” during the 2018/19 season. As our Mellon playwright-in-residence Saymoukda Duangphouxay Vongsay says, “It is necessary to create spaces to help amplify refugee-identifying playwrights and their stories so that Asian American theater and American theater are richer.”
