KUNG FU ZOMBIES in-progress puppetry
puppet designer Kris Muas works with Monkeybear’s Erica Warren on a moving eye mechanism. The magic? Ring magnets, wooden dowels, and glue.
During a previous Mu show, Kris Muas was a properties design apprentice and made intricate crepe plants with dense buds no more than 1.5 inches in diameter. For this show—Kris’ first as a lead Mu designer—director Fran de Leon asked them to go big: Think a 6-foot, 5-inch zombie puppet.
“Fran was talking to me how she wanted the puppet to be life sized and wrapped around the body, and pretending to bite the men,” Kris says. “I’ve never made a life-sized puppet, but this is fun—I can do that because I have thrown bodies around before as an EMT, and I’ve dragged bodies, and I’ve moved bodies. I know what a body looks like and should feel like.”
Made of magnets, PVC pipes, shelf liners, coat hangers, and more items reused or found, these two puppets will be ready to rumble with a horde of human zombies to back them up. See them for yourself at our world premiere by Saymoukda Duangphouxay Vongsay, opening Halloween.
