Meet the Girl Scouts
DEXIENG YANG plays SAMOA: As the oldest daughter, I relate to the weight of responsibility Samoa carries—though obviously we carry very different things. I love her through the hard decisions she has to make and the softer moments we get to see her at. Her survival instincts feel deeply human. In Samoa's shoes, I find myself asking what I feel so many of us would when the world is falling apart—what do I still have to protect?
I was pregnant in the audience watching the first two Kung Fu Zombies when Southeast Asian Girl Scouts was announced, and I said, "I am going to audition for that." That baby is now 3. I can not explain the excitement and honor I have to be a part of this trilogy. Saymoukda has a way of blending community, joy, anger, sorrow, and humor to real situations that make me feel seen and heard.
HOPE NORDQUIST plays DO-SI-DO: I love Do-Si-Do because she's pragmatic and a badass. I love her strength and her deep care for her friends and her community. I relate to her in so many ways, but I think mostly in wanting to be able to do what is right and the way she cares so deeply and sometimes struggles to show that care in gentle ways.
I think one of the most powerful parts of the show is the way we as Asian women are often tasked with things so much larger than ourselves and learn to meet those things head on. Seeing three Asian women not only take great care of and responsibility for their community but … [also] process how hard that can be allows us to acknowledge what it is to believe in duty and honor and above all: survival.
MIA GUZMAN plays THIN MINT: Thin Mint is definitely the baby of the family, and that's something I've been working on stepping into as an oldest child and perpetual mentor figure (though being on the younger and less experienced side of this show has helped a bit). KFZVSEAGS is certainly a bit of a bildungsroman for Thin Mint. Throughout the show, we see her step into her own version of strength, maturity, and leadership beyond her role as the community's "Wire Witch.”
I love the show's emphasis on strength in community. Building a supportive community has always been at the forefront of my success and survival, and it has been so fulfilling to continue that process both as Thin Mint and as Mia.
Can these three Girl Scouts save their Mt. Airy community during the zombie apocalypse?
In this world premiere by local playwright Saymouka Duangphouxay Vongsay, follow Thin Mint, Samoa, and Do-Si-Do as they protect their Saint Paul community, which was abandoned by local authorities during the zombie apocalypse. Between helping their elders, doing medicine runs, and building campfires, they’ve probably earned, like, four Gold Awards each. But what if the zombies aren’t the most dangerous monsters out there?
