Theater Mu is seeking an emerging or early-career designer with a professional interest in lighting design to work with production lighting designer Kathy Maxwell during the world premiere production Maybe You Could Love Me. During their residency, the fellow will gain a working knowledge of the design timeline, ideation arc, and deliverables; the artistic relationships between the lighting designer, the director, the technical director, and other production team members; and strategies for research and design dramaturgy.
Stipend: $1,000

SYNOPSIS
Sajida and Noor have been best friends since they were little, but is their love romantic? Could it be, since their Islamic sect prohibits homosexuality? This new play looks at freedom, love, and belonging between two women from elementary school to adulthood.
REHEARSAL & PERFORMANCE DATES
Pre-Production Meetings: mid-July and onward
First Rehearsal: Aug 12, 2025
Tech Rehearsals: Sept 3-13, 2025
Previews: Sept 11 & 12, 2025
Opening Night: Sept 13, 2025
Closing Performance: Sept 28, 2025
Rehearsals will take place at the Theater Mu studio (755 Prior Ave N, #107, Saint Paul), and tech and performances will take place at Mixed Blood Theatre (1501 S Fourth St., Minneapolis).
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of theatrical lighting gear and equipment in regards to designing.
Knowledge of the tech process and its purpose.
Ability to take notes and update data-based software throughout the tech process.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills.
Excellent observation, listening, attentiveness, and awareness skills.
Experience, ability, and commitment to working with individuals and teams that are mixed across lines of difference such as race, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, ability, age, class, and immigrant status.
The ability to work well under pressure and to respond calmly and efficiently to frequent changes during the production and rehearsal process.
Reliability: While hours can be flexible, you must be open to evenings and weekends, reflective of the dynamic schedule of the theater.
Access to personal or public transportation to get to meetings, rehearsals, etc.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
1+ years of academic, professional, or internship experience in lighting design, OR 1+ years of academic, professional, or volunteer experience as a theater technician in any design area.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensure familiarity with the play before design meetings begin (a script will be provided).
View the role from a learning perspective and share thoughts on the production if elicited by the designer.
Work with the design mentor to set learning objectives and complete designated projects.
Attend design and production meetings as requested by the designer, director, or production manager.
Attend all technical rehearsals.
Attend fellowship orientation, mid-process evaluation, and final reflection meeting after the fellowship concludes.
Completes Theater Mu’s post-show fellowship survey.
Meet the Designer
KATHY MAXWELL (she/her) is a freelance lighting and video designer based in the Twin Cities. She has worked for many theatres in town including Penumbra Theatre, the History Theatre, Park Square, the Jungle Theatre, Mixed Blood, the Children’s Theatre, the Ordway Center and the Guthrie. Kathy received her B.A. in Theatre and Dance from the University of Texas at Austin and her M.F.A. in theatrical lighting and video design from the University of Minnesota. Select design credits include This Bitter Earth, Vietgone, The Curious Incident of the Dog…, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide…, Soldier Songs, All the Way, and The Paper Dreams of Harry Chin.
