Our response to the Indianapolis shooting

Theater Mu, along with our shared community, is outraged, saddened, and emboldened by the senseless murder of members of the Sikh community in Indianapolis. As anti-Asian violence continues across the United States, fueled by unchecked white supremacy and over-abundance of firearms, our resolve to uplift and empower the Asian community has never been stronger.

Our Sikh and South Asian community experienced unwarranted discrimination and violence in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks. In the decades after, we as a society, have not done enough to include our Sikh and South Asian community in discussions on racialized violence and religious discrimination. The mass killing in Indianapolis follows the police killing of Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center and the killings of Asian immigrants in the Atlanta area.

We mourn for the loss of life. We celebrate them for more than the way they died. We hold our Sikh and South Asian community members in our hearts today and all days.

We ask our community to listen to South Asian and Sikh leaders during this time. You may follow the The Sikh Coalition, a civil rights advocacy group to learn how you can support the Indianapolis Sikh community and receive updates and responsible coverage as more information develops.
