2022/23: The pearl ANNIVERSARY

“My theater work came out of my community activism, and became an extension of that activism. Being Asian American, there are so many hurdles to get across in terms of creating awareness and recognition of Asian American theater, wherever you go. Those two are, for me, wedded together completely.” — Rick Shiomi, co-founder of Theater Mu

On Mu's 30th anniversary, we highlight words spoken by someone who inspires us every day: Rick Shiomi. Three decades after he co-founded Mu, we still strive to carry on his philosophy, as Mu continues to stand on its pillars of high quality art, Asian American stories, and social justice. The privilege of leading Theater Mu during its Pearl Anniversary is not lost on me, Mu’s staff, or its board. In a world where survival is a gift, we feel grateful to have the opportunity to shepherd this thriving, cherished company into the next 30 years.

To celebrate our milestone, this season features the stories of longtime and beloved Mu artists, and we also honor the elders who paved the way for us. When Mu was founded, few of our stories were being told, yet because of their fight, commitment, and generosity, our season is filled with new Asian American work that helps represent the breadth and depth of our diverse experiences. We hope you can join us!
