EXPANDING THE AMERICAN THEATER CANON

Help AAPI theater continue to thrive in a struggling industry.

Our 30th Pearl Anniversary season included four world premieres that spotlighted Southeast Asian stories as well as a three-day conference that brought Asian American theater luminaries together from across the country. This was only possible thanks to a significant increase in budget. In fact, Theater Mu is proud to announce that we have officially surpassed the $1 million annual operating budget threshold.

This increase in budget is a direct result of creating theater in a post-pandemic world. Supply costs have almost doubled. Many artists were forced to leave the industry, which means new artists must be trained to fill the void left behind. The pandemic also exposed flaws in our industry, prompting Theater Mu to raise artist and staff compensation, ensuring they are paid equitably, and to create a more empathetic work environment with five-day rehearsal weeks, shorter tech rehearsals, and understudy coverage for both cast and crew.

Although these changes were necessary to remain true to our mission of art, equity, and justice, the question arises, “Are these practices sustainable?”

Theater Mu’s growth has been possible thanks to a few one-time, multi-year grants from national foundations. Once these multi-year grants end, Mu will be tasked with replacing these funds during a time when local and national theaters are reducing seasons and laying off staff.

We need our community’s help to sustain the growth of Mu. We are committed to authentically bringing Asian American stories to life. We are committed to centering empathy and equity for our Asian American artists and staff. We are committed to amplifying Asian American voices for another 30 years and beyond.

Help us reach our goal of $30,000 by Aug 31 and donate TODAY in support of a more artistic, equitable, and sustainable Theater Mu.
