About the Conference

Celebrating Theater Mu’s 30th Anniversary, the AAPI Generations Conference (May 19-21, 2023) will honor Asian American theater elders while connecting them with the voices of the future. This three-day celebration of Asian American theater and its history will include new play readings during our annual New Eyes Festival, interactive exhibits, and community-based workshops and panels featuring early- and mid-career artists as well as the founders of the Asian American theater movement. Plus, there was no way we couldn’t hold the conference and not include a live music party for all to gather and celebrate.

The AAPI Generations Conference will provide participants with a unique experience to engage deeply with Asian American art, history, and community discussion.

About the Breakout Sessions

In addition to a keynote and closing panel attended by guests of honor, the conference will also feature breakout sessions designed and led by theater makers, community members, and artist activists that in some way focus on one or more of the tenets that Theater Mu was founded on: Asian American stories, exemplary theater, and social justice.

These 60- and 90-minute breakout sessions will feature topics related to art, history, and activism within our community, such as how theater can counteract anti-Asian hate or how to make the arts a more accessible career for all artists.

Breakouts may take several formats, such as:

  • Panel discussion (e.g., a professional discussion among playwrights who self-produce)

  • Seminar (e.g. how to maximize income streams for artists)

  • Presentation (e.g. an overview of the work done by a local artist coalition.)

  • Other formats: sessions that are outside the traditional speaker-audience format, such as skill-sharing sessions, smaller affinity group discussions, or interactive workshops and activities.

There is an honorarium of $75 for panelists/facilitators. If there are any additional costs associated with your workshop, i.e., additional materials or support, please put that information in your application and we will contact you if we have any questions.

Proposals will be reviewed by members of Theater Mu staff. We will respond to all applicants by Feb 20.

We look forward to hearing from you!
